Logo_UGVCLThe state of Gujarat in India has added another feather in the cap by being the first to roll out Smart Grid project in the nation. Uttar Gujarat Vij Company Ltd.(UGVCL) will be rolling out the Smart Grid project in Naroda, Ahmedabad and Deesa, Banaskantha by April, 2014. The UGVCL MD Nityanand Srivastava announced at the sidelines of “Energy Conclave”  organized by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) that the focus of the project is to study the energy consumption behavior of the consumers. The project will study 20,000 urban residential, commercial, and industrial consumers at Naroda, Ahmedabad and 18,000 rural residential and agricultural consumers at Deesa, Banaskantha.

The company has invited bidders for 48 crore IT-enabled intelligent grid system, which in addition to reducing power theft and transmissions and distribution losses, will effectively manage power consumption in such a way that demand of energy will be balanced-out through the day and reduce peak surges. In essence the company plans to employ “Time of Use” criteria for billing the customers, which will disincentivize the consumer of using the electricity during peak hours. As part of the pilot project the company plans to install the smart meter with SIM cards which will monitor the consumer usage every 15 minutes. With the available data and feedback, new tariff will be created for the piloted regions.

After the month long tender review process, the 48 crore project which is jointly been developed by central government and UGVCL, appropriate implementation partner will be selected. Eventually, the whole of Gujarat will be covered by the Smart Meters and Smart Grid.
